Port and modal allocation of waterborne containerized imports from Asia to the United States

چکیده

An economic optimization model of waterborne containerized imports from Asia to the USA is described. Imports are allocated to alternative ports and logistics channels so as to minimize total transportation and inventory costs for each importer. Logistics channels include direct shipment of marine containers via truck or rail, and trans-loading in the hinterlands of the ports of entry from marine containers into domestic trailers or containers. The model was exercised with 2004 actual transportation costs, import volumes and declared values, plus a range of hypothetical container fees assessed on imports routed via the San Pedro Bay Ports. The results show that, without reductions in container movement lead times, container fees would result in significant diversion of cargoes to other ports. In contrast, if infrastructure is improved such that lead times for container movement are significantly reduced, the model predicts little or no decrease in overall imports via San Pedro Bay but a substantial increase in trans-loaded imports for fees ranging up to $200 per 40-foot container. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Congestion Analysis of Waterborne, Containerized Imports from Asia to the United States

A queuing model is introduced for estimating container flow times through port terminals as a function of infrastructure, staffing, and import volume. The model is statistically calibrated on industry data. Flow-time estimates of the model are aggregated with estimates from models previously developed for rail networks to develop estimates of the total container flow times from West Coast ports...

A supply-chain optimization model of the allocation of containerized imports from Asia to the United States

This article proposes a mixed integer non-linear programming model for the optimizing supply chains of importers of waterborne containerized goods from Asia to the USA. This model determines the least-cost strategy for an importer, in terms of ports and landside transportation modes to be used, where costs considered include costs for transportation and handling, pipeline inventory, and safety-...

Modeling the Container Selection for Freight Transportation: Case Study of Iran

Significant advantages of intermodal and containerized transport have increased the global interest to this mode of transportation. This growing interest is reflected in the annual volume of container cargo growth. However, the container transport inside Iran does not have a proper place. Comparing the count of containers entering and leaving ports with the statistics obtained from railway and ...

Estimating flow times for containerized imports from Asia to the United States through the Western rail network

Queuing models are introduced for estimating container dwell times at rail intermodal terminals and transit times through rail line-haul corridors. These models are statistically calibrated on industry data. The intent of these models is to estimate changes in container flow times stemming from changes in infrastructure, staffing levels at terminals, or import volumes passing through given infr...
